Sampling Ebook Subscription Service Scribd

Ebook subscription services Scribd and Oyster are on the rise. I wasn’t sure how they would do when I learned my books would be distributed there. Would they take off like movie streaming services? Time will tell, but I’m currently getting to try out Scribd. I wasn’t sure if I’d like it, but so far I’m thinking it could be a book-lovers dream.

Scribd is comparable to Netflix (or similar services). You pay a monthly fee for unlimited reading with a choice of big titles and lesser-known ones. Like with Netflix, it means discovering titles you may never have found otherwise. On the other hand, it means you still have to buy a lot of bigger titles if you wish to read them.

I went a little nuts filling my library with books I’d never come across before, as well as books I’d seen but never got around to trying. From what I’ve seen in the short time I’ve been using Scribd, new material keeps coming in. It’s certainly feeding my reading fetish right now without sucking me dry. (More money for summer clothes!)

The app is also easy to use. You can browse by category or search the recommendations and lists on the main page, adding titles you like to your library. When you’re ready to go, you can read within the app or save to your device. The way the books are formatted is very comfortable to read, even on my smartphone. And I like that it keeps track of your reading progress, showing both the page you’re on and the percentage you’ve read. You can bookmark by tapping the little symbol at the top of each page.

If you want to test ride one of these ebook subscription services, both Oyster and Scribd offer a free one-month trial. But be warned: if you love to read, it may be addictive!

You can read all of my books, including The Belinda & Bennett Mysteries, on both Scribd and Oyster.

What are your thoughts on ebook subscription services? Yay or nay?
