babyproof

A short story featuring characters from The Belinda & Bennett Mysteries. In this story, Victoria’s husband has become a tad safety obsessed.

There were clear rubber bumpers on anything that looked even remotely sharp. Victoria’s house was covered in them. But there was something significant missing from several rooms. “What happened to the ceiling fans?” Belinda said, coming back to the banquette off the kitchen.

“Dan took them all down last night.” Victoria poured pink lemonade, maneuvering her baby bump around the table to sit. “I woke up last night and he was rubberizing our entire house.”

“I can see that.” Belinda fingered the new rubber corner on the table. “But why did he take the ceiling fans down? It’s hot.”

“In case Baby flies up to the ceiling and gets decapitated?”

Belinda laughed. “If the peanut can fly, I think we have other concerns.”

“He’s gone completely nutty.” Victoria sighed. “He wants to get rid of the piano.”

“Uh–what now?”

“Yeah. Baby might climb up, open the top, fall in, and get trapped inside because apparently we’re going to be the worst parents ever.”

“But you teach piano. You kind of need the piano.”

“Somehow that argument went right over his head.”

Belinda spun her glass around, shaking her head. “He’s just nervous. I think now that you’re showing, and the bump is obviously getting–bumpier–it’s just hitting him how real it is. He’ll calm down and put the ceiling fans back.”

“And the gnomes?”

“He moved the gnomes?”

“They have pointy heads.”

Belinda smirked, thinking of the gnome in her garden that Dan made Victoria give away. Bennett had installed the rest of the outside security cameras and they’d placed the gnome in view of one of them to see if it did jigs after dark. So far they’d been disappointed.

“I’m not saying I’m not a little nutty right now,” Victoria continued, “because you know I am. But even thinking about getting rid of my piano? I’d just as soon throw Dan out because he might hurt the baby.”

Belinda smiled, taking her friend’s hand across the table. “He’s crazy because he loves you. Both of you.”

“Do you think we’ll ever go back to normal?”

“Um…not likely. You weren’t exactly normal before this.”

Victoria narrowed her eyes. “You know what I mean.”

“Yes, you’ll go back to normal. I think. Of course, what do I know? I’ve never been through this.”

“Thanks for the reassurance.”

Belinda laughed. “Fine. I’m a hundred percent sure that it’s most likely a possibility that you two will calm down eventually. Maybe.”

“What would I do without you?”

“Name your child after Dan’s grandfather.”

Victoria tipped her chin up, thinking about that for a moment. “Good point.” She held up the pitcher. “More lemonade?”

Belinda pushed her glass forward. “Yes, please.”
